Company Shop and Coalfields Partnership Shortlisted For National Award

Company Shop, the UK’s largest redistributor of surplus food, is celebrating after its ongoing partnership with the Coalfields Regeneration Trust has been nationally recognised for its transformative work.

The Trust, which is the only organisation dedicated to supporting former mining towns and villages throughout the UK, has been shortlisted for ‘Charity Partnership of the Year’ at the Third Sector Awards, as a result of its work with Company Shop.

Over the past few years, the two organisations have worked together on a number of strategic initiatives which have driven the improvement of the lives of those living in coalfield communities, socially, economically and environmentally.

Company Shop’s social enterprise and the UK’s first social supermarket chain, Community Shop, celebrated the opening of its third store in Athersley in 2016. Community Shop collaborated with the Coalfields Regeneration Trust to launch the store, with the Trust contributing towards its development by acquiring a former community building in the area and investing in fitting it for purpose, so that members could access heavily discounted food.

Recognising the need for support in coalfields communities and the aligned values and positive impact that has been achieved as a result both organisations and nationally recognised through the shortlisting, this unique partnership creates a model that can be replicated throughout the country to the benefit of thousands of people who want to build a future for themselves and their families.

This year’s winners will be announced at the Third Sector Awards Ceremony, taking place at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, on the 21st September.

John Marren, Chairman and Founder of Company Shop, said:

I am delighted that our partnership with the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, and the transformative work that has been achieved as a result, has been nationally recognised by this award shortlisting. The Trust shares our sense of passion and purpose for the local communities that we serve, delivering positive change.”

Gary Ellis, Chief Executive for the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, comments:

As the only organisation dedicated to regenerating Britain’s coalfields, we are very pleased to have been recognised for the hard work that we put in to returning the former mining towns and villages to the thriving communities they once were."

We are up against some tough competition but we know the only way to make a real and lasting change to the coalfield communities, supporting the future of generations to come, is to work in partnership with organisations such as Community Shop, that have a responsive and progressive strategy in place that aligns with that of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.
