Company Shop Partners with Barnsley Council as a Primary Authority Regulator to drive further Innovation in Surplus Redistribution

Company Shop, the UK’s largest redistributor of surplus, and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council have forged a Primary Authority partnership. The partnership enables Barnsley Trading Standards to regulate Company Shop as it innovates to increase the amount of good food and household products saved from becoming waste in the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) supply chain.  The partnership will be especially relevant when Company Shop are re-labelling and repackaging surplus stock.

An example of the relationship in action will encompass WRAP’s (Waste and Resources Action Programme) new guidelines regarding freezing chilled stock as it nears its Use By date. This process will extend the life of the product by enabling it to be sold frozen, allowing Company Shop to maximise the volume of short-dated, chilled surplus stock it can receive from manufacturers. Frozen products will then be redistributed in temperature-controlled conditions to its stores nationwide and sold at great prices to members, helping the whole industry drive down waste.  This will achieve positive social and environmental impact for the supply chain, as well as enabling Company Shop to extend the frozen range it has on offer in its stores. As the Primary Authority, Barnsley Trading Standards will assure Company Shop’s procedures and practices in this area, ensuring compliance.

Another advantage of the new Primary Authority relationship will be assuring Company Shop’s Own “Essentials Labelling Manual” which covers all aspects of labelling products so they are fully compliant to current UK Legislation. With guidance from the Primary Authority and the Brand Owner, Company Shop will be able to increase the speed in which the product reaches their stores and therefore maximise redistribution, ensuring brand protection is maintained at all times.

Company Shop is well-primed, with this new relationship in place, to handle and redistribute more surplus than ever before.

Speaking about the partnership Andrew Barnaby, Trading Standards Officer at Barnsley Council said:

“I’m pleased that Company Shop Ltd have entered into a Primary Authority Partnership with the council. Creating such a partnership will enable us to build a strong relationship going forward, and enable us to provide assured advice to Company Shop Ltd to ensure that they are compliant with relevant legislation and to provide support for one of Barnsley’s most successful businesses in order for them to grow.”

Jane Marren, Managing Director of Company Shop added:

“We are first and foremost a solutions provider for the FMCG supply chain, helping our clients unlock the value in their surplus.  With this new Primary Authority relationship in place, we open up more possibilities to redistribute an even greater quantity of surplus food and household products for our clients safety, swiftly and compliantly.”
