Mayor Praises Impact of Company Shop

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, has praised the impact of the newly opened St Helens Company Shop, after a visit to see first-hand the benefits the store is generating in the local community.

Company Shop is the largest redistributor of surplus food and products in the UK, and with its social enterprise, Community Shop, it works with all the major food retailers, manufacturers and brands, to stop more than 50 million items of food from going to waste each year.

The St Helens branch of the pioneering food redistribution store first opened its doors in January, with the support of Marie Rimmer MP, and stocks good food and household products at up to 1/3 of the normal retail price. Membership of Company Shop is open to people who work within the food and FMCG supply chain, the emergency services and the NHS, helping families to stretch their budgets. So far, over 15,400 people have signed up to benefit from membership and this number is increasing each week.

Alongside the new St Helens Company Shop superstore, which has created 30 full time jobs, there are also plans to deliver up to five Community Shops in the Liverpool City Region over the next two to three years.

Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram said:

“I was delighted to visit the Company Shop store and to see the brilliant work in action. It is a fantastic food redistribution model, utilising surplus food from major UK brands, which would otherwise be going to waste. Our region has a vibrant food manufacturing industry and I look forward to Company Shop’s further expansion in the region, to create more jobs and bring great value food to the local community.”

John Marren, Chairman and Founder of Company Shop, commented:

“We were so pleased to welcome Steve Rotheram to the store, and we were delighted to have the opportunity to showcase what we are achieving by redistributing surplus food and household products in the local area.

We have always been motivated to make a difference and we are delighted to be able to bring the benefits of Company Shop to the region.”
