5 Easy Apple Recipes to Try at Home

An apple a day, keeps the doctor away - and stops food from going to waste!

Check out these 5 simple apple-based recipes that find new uses even once they start to go soft, and make eating 1 of your 5-a-day even tastier.

Toffee apples

A classic sweet treat perfect for Halloween festivities.

Ingredients:

  • Apples

  • Caster sugar

  • Water

  • Golden syrup

  • Sprinkles (as topping)

  • Kebab sticks (for the handles)

Method:

  1. Rinse off the apples in water to remove any wax – this helps the caramel to stick better to the skin.

  2. To make the caramel, heat sugar and water in a pan on a low heat. Don’t stir it – just swirl the pan so it doesn’t sit still for too long. Add the golden syrup and let melt until it reaches 150’c.

Top tip – if you don’t have a thermometer, test a little bit by dropping a bit of mixture into cold water. If it goes hard straight away, it’s ready!

  1. Generously coat the apples in the toffee mixture by dunking in the pan. If you’re adding additional sprinkles, dip the coated apple in the sprinkles quickly and then set the apple on a tray (stick up).

Apple & autumn fruit crumble

A delicious dessert that pairs well with ice cream and custard.

Ingredients:

Crumb topping:

  • Flour

  • Caster sugar

  • Butter

Filling:

  • Apples

  • Blackberries

Method:

  1. In a pan, mix chopped apples, blackberries and sugar on a low heat to let stew until slightly soft. Line the bottom of a deep dish.

  2. Mix flour and sugar in a bowl, then add melted butter. Rub together with your fingertips until it looks like sand.

Top tip – don’t let the mixture go on your palms – they’re much warmer than your fingertips and will make it messier!

  1. Spread the crumb mixture over the cooked fruit. Sprinkle with sugar and bake until golden.

Spiced apple sauce

A twist you’ll be heaping onto your plate at your next Sunday roast.

Ingredients:

  • Apples

  • Caster sugar

  • Butter

  • Cinnamon

  • Allspice

Method:

  1. Melt the caster sugar, butter and spices in a pan.

  2. In a pottery dish, coat the apples in the sugar mixture and bake until the apples are tender. Mash until you’re happy with the consistency.

Appletini

A 4-ingredient cocktail perfect for your next dinner party.

Ingredients:

  • Apple juice

  • Vodka

  • Lemon juice

  • Apple slice (to garnish)

Method:

  1. In a shaker, combine all the ingredients and ice and shake until it feels cold.

  2. Pour into a fancy glass and garnish with a slice of fresh apple.

Pork & apple sausage rolls

Bite-sized snacks perfect for a picky bits tea.

Ingredients:

  • Sausage meat

  • Apples

  • Ready rolled puff pastry

  • Egg wash

  • Oil

  • Onion

  • Carrot

Method:

  1. Finely dice the onion, carrot and apple, and mix together with the sausage meat and oil until combined.

  2. On a baking tray, roll out the pastry and make a long line of the sausage meat.

  3. Brush the edges of the pastry with egg wash and squash together to make a roll. Slice into bite-sized pieces.

Top tip: For a MEGA sausage roll, don’t cut it before baking.
