Conjure up a Crafty Halloween!

This Halloween, the real fright isn’t the ghosts, it’s the waste we leave behind. So, this year, let’s make our own decorations! You’d be surprised at how many scary supplies you already have lying around at home or in your garden. These simple, zero-waste crafts make the perfect half-term activity for kids (and grown-ups!), so let’s get spooky!

Sock pumpkins

If cute and cosy is more your style, give these sock pumpkins a try. You can make two pumpkins from just one sock, and the more different patterns you use, the prettier your zero-waste harvest will be!

Cut the sock in half at the heel, stuff both parts with an old tatty pair of socks or cotton wool, and sew up the ends to make two soft balls. Wrap string tightly around each one to create pumpkin ridges, then glue a small twig in the top for a stem. Voilà - perfectly plump pumpkins!

Milk carton monsters

For these ghostly little faces, all you need is a plastic milk carton, a pair of scissors, a dark felt-tip pen, and a battery-powered tealight. Draw on eyes and a mouth, then cut a small flap at the back and pop the tealight inside to create a spooky glow. When Halloween’s over, you can recycle the cartons or pack them away for next year.

Pinecone bats

Create a whole swarm of bats using an empty cereal box and a few pinecones! Cut out some wing shapes and glue a pinecone in the middle – perfect for easy, last-minute Halloween décor.

Wicked witch's broom

Spooky, seasonal, and useful too! Gather up a bunch of dry twigs (roughly the same length) and 1 bigger, sturdier stick. Arrange the little twigs around the base of the stick and tie with string - the perfect witchy touch for your doorstep.

Who knew being spooky could be so sustainable? With a few simple swaps, you can have a Halloween that’s full of fun, not waste.
