5 Ways to Take Doughnuts From Simple to Showstopping

Calling all doughnut fans! Packs of glazed doughnuts recently appeared in our freezers – but there’s more to them than meets the eye and their simple white labels.

Originally destined for a famous high street bakery chain, but with too much stock to sell, they ended up with us instead to stop them from needlessly going to waste.

We’ve got a couple of tricks up our sleeve to take them from simple sweet treat, to delicious doughnut delicacy.

Ice cream sandwich

No cookies, no problem! These doughnuts makes a great substitute, thanks to its size and dense texture. Make sure to grab a napkin too!

Slice one in half lengthways, and add 2 – 3 scoops of your favourite ice cream to 1 half. Drizzle some chocolate or caramel sauce over the scoops, then place the other half on top.

S’more ideas

For an indulgent campfire treat, you’ll only need 3 ingredients – doughnuts, marshmallows, and chocolate.

After cutting the doughnut in half, layer the chocolate pieces and then the marshmallows, before topping it with the other half. Wrap it in tinfoil, and heat for 2-3 minutes, and enjoy.

Watch out – this sweet treat will be hot and a bit messy!

Dough balls

Who needs Cake Pops when you can make Dough Balls instead!

Simply scrunch up a doughnut until it’s nothing but crumbs. In a big bowl, add the crumbs, icing, and sprinkles, and mix until thoroughly combined. Scoop some crumbs and roll them into a ball, roughly the size of a 50p piece.

Drop each dough ball into melted chocolate, and once it’s completely coated, put onto a baking tray and top with sprinkles. Leave them in the fridge to chill until the chocolate is a hard shell. Delicious!

French toast

If your doughnuts have started to become a bit hard, they’re now perfect to use for French Toast.

In a large bowl, mix eggs, milk, double cream and cinnamon. Dunk the doughnut in the mixture so it’s completely coated, and lightly fry until it starts to crisp. Serve with a dusting of icing sugar and whipped cream.

Dessert nachos

Who says nachos have to be savoury? These doughnut nachos are packed with sweet treats, and make a pudding made for sharing.

Chop doughnuts into bite sized pieces, and layer them with chopped fresh fruits, nuts, and drizzles of melted chocolate and strawberry sauce.

There’s no right way to enjoy a doughnut, so if you’ve got a hack for making surplus even tastier, share it in your local Facebook group.
