Company Shop Group, the UK’s leading redistributor of surplus food and household products, is delighted to announce the re-launch of Company Shop Washington on September 24th.
The store has undergone a complete refit and will be the first in the country to feature the new ‘The Surplus Supermarket’ branding, highlighting to members that the store is powered entirely by surplus products. The re-launch event will be marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Mayor of the City of Sunderland, Councillor Allison Chisnall.
Washington Company Shop is one of 14 Company Shops across the UK, providing its members with access to discounted food and household products. All the food and products sold are in date and perfectly good to eat but are deemed ‘surplus’ for a variety of reasons – be it wonky labelling, seasonal packaging or overstock.
Since opening in September 2018, Company Shop Washington has redistributed over 19,000 tonnes of surplus stock, equating to over 37m products, and saved its members more than £39m on their shopping. By stopping these perfectly good products from going to waste, the equivalent of 51,263 tonnes of CO2 have also been saved.
