Spooktacular and Sustainable Halloween Décor

A terrifying amount of Halloween costumes and decorations end up going to waste every year.

Don’t be a wasteful witch this year. Make last year's costumes into something new, do a costume exchange with someone else, or dress the dog up in it.

Costume tips and tricks (and treats if you want)

  • No-one remembers who you were last year, so be them again- they'll never know.

  • Take bits from old costumes and make something new- be original and make your own characters!

  • Cut up old sheets or towels to be a ghost- simple, yet effective.

  • Use old clothes to make realistic outfits, or go as your favourite sitcom character so you don't have buy anything new to complete the look.

  • Make your own fake blood instead of buying it- just watch out for staining!

Boo-tiful decorations

Too many decorations are used once and thrown away straight after. Very wasteful, not very demure.
Instead of buying single use decorations, use materials you already have at home to make some. It's fun, reduces waste, and you can keep them for next year too.

All you need is a bit of paint, glue, and can-do attitude to make something new.

  • Sauce jars as lanterns- paint the glass/wrap paper round it, flip so lid is on the bottom, put a tealight inside to make own spooky lighting.

  • Save plastic bottles from the recycling and make spooky pen pots.

  • Use tin cans to make spooky friends- how many monsters can you make?

Let’s get creative!

There are no rules for Halloween decorations, so have fun with it. Maybe your home-made bat is a bit chonky- that’s okay! Perhaps the fake blood you’ve made is more orange than red. Who cares? Making your own decorations is fun and stops stuff from going to waste, and will save you money. What’s not to love about that?
