Stop food waste snowballing this Christmas

Have a holly, jolly Christmas, it’s the best time of the year. We don’t know, if there’ll be snow, but we do know that there will be an un-festive amount of food that’ll go to waste.

The festive period is a time for eating loads of lovely foods, but sadly, quite a large amount of it will end up in the bin.

We can’t help having leftovers, but we can keep them instead of chucking them away.

Here are a few tips on how to reduce food waste at Christmas, and how to make your food last longer, with the help of The Food Standards Agency

Leftovers should be chilled as soon as they’re cooled and kept in the fridge leading up to being eaten whenever possible.

If you don’t eat them within two days, as long as they’ve been refrigerated, leftovers can be frozen and saved for a later date.

To defrost your leftovers, put them back in the fridge. Make sure you eat them within 24 hours too.

You can freeze products up until midnight on their use by date, and they’ll still be safe to eat.

Frozen food can last for months:

  • Meats will stay at their best for up to 3 months

  • Baked items, fruits and vegetable will stay at their best for up to 4 months

Leftovers, or a whole new meal?

  • Spare pigs in blankets? They’re the perfect ingredient for a fancy festive toad in the hole!

  • We’ve always got turkey left over, so mix it up and whip up the poshest toastie ever with cranberry sauce, turkey, gravy and roasted vegetables.

  • Mix up your flavours and create a winter vegetable curry to bring the heat.

Sharing is caring- give to friends, family, acquaintances, or save it for some very fancy compost.

Really, there’s no end to the possibilities of leftover food!

Waste less, save the planet, and be jolly.
