How Shopping Surplus Helps You Save

The world of surplus is a little different - and it’s exactly what makes shopping at Company Shop so special.

Every day, thousands of perfectly good products never make it onto supermarket shelves. Maybe they’ve been overproduced, maybe the packaging has changed, maybe a delivery was delayed, or maybe they’re leftover from a seasonal run. Whatever the reason, they’re too good to waste and that’s where we come in.

We work with manufacturers and retailers to rescue this surplus and bring it straight to our members, helping you save money while helping the industry reduce waste.

But there’s one type of surplus we think deserves a spotlight…

What Are “Downgraded” Products?

“Downgraded product” sounds far more dramatic than it actually is.

These are simply products that taste great and are perfectly safe to eat, but didn’t quite meet the supermarket’s strict quality standards.

That might mean:

  • a soup that’s a little thinner (or runnier) than usual

  • beans that are slightly softer, firmer, or occasionally a bit more “toasted” than expected

  • sauces that have thickened or reduced more than planned

  • or products that look or behave slightly differently to the standard supermarket version

These differences don’t affect food safety.

They just make the product different, not faulty and that’s why it ends up in our surplus chain rather than going to waste.

Why Does This Happen?

Food production is incredibly precise — and even small changes can create big differences.

A slight shift in cooking time, heat levels, ingredient ratios, machinery, or batch size can affect things like texture, consistency and appearance.

Supermarkets tend to reject anything that falls outside their exact specification, even when the food is perfectly fine.

At Company Shop, we don’t think great food should go to waste because of tiny quirks. So we buy these products at a discount and pass those savings straight on to you.

Small Differences, Big Impact

Every downgraded item rescued is one less product heading towards landfill or disposal.

By shopping with us, you’re not only saving money, you’re playing an important part in reducing food waste across the UK.

Surplus might look a little different, but it does a whole lot of good.
