The terrifying truth about Halloween waste

There’s nothing more frightening than food waste.

Okay, so maybe ghouls and zombies are more frightening. But the thing is, food waste is a very real thing that we need to be worried about. We need to know about how it’s harming the environment, and how Halloween- the spookiest time of year- adds a terrifying amount of rubbish to our very full rubbish bins.

Those are some of the scariest facts you’ll ever see.

Don’t be a wasteful witch, or a terrifying trash troll this Halloween. There are loads of ways you can decorate and dress-up, and do so without spending loads of (if any) money for your upcoming spookfests. How about giving these ideas a try, instead of adding more rubbish to those spooky stats?

Pumpkin soup

  • Cut pumpkin into chunks and heat in a pan until it starts to soften.

  • Add vegetable or chicken stock, salt & pepper, heat through until the pumpkin is very soft. Then add double cream to the pan and heat through.

  • Blend it up and you’re done! You can even freeze once cool and be kept for up to 2 months.

  • TOP TIP: enjoy with crusty warm bread and butter.

Diabolical Decorations

There are no rules for making things at Halloween, so have fun with it!

  • Make friendly ghosts out of old sheets.

  • There’s nothing some paint can’t improve- slap a coat of black paint onto a cardboard toilet roll and cut it up to make some bats that can hang from your ceiling.

  • Save your empty jars, and stick a battery tealight inside to make an eerie glow- easy and fire safe!

Crazy Costumes

People won’t remember what you were last year, so use that to your advantage…

Got old costumes that don’t fit anymore? Chop them up and make them into something new. Be original! Create a new monster by making your own accessories out of cardboard boxes and glue. Chop up an old sheet and be a ghost- easy and effective.

Frightening Food

  • First off- do not buy more than you need! You can always buy more if necessary, but don’t go ham on the chocolates if they won’t get eaten.

  • Second- if you end up with loads of sweets leftover from trick-or-treating, Don’t chuck them away. Use them for baking or add them to puddings.

  • Third- Pumpkins release lots of methane gas when they break down in landfill. Instead of them going to waste, add them to your compost to help your plants.

  • Fourth- Bake the pumpkins instead, and cut them up when cool- your dogs will love them (just check with your vet first if you’re worried).

With your Company Shop membership, you’re already reducing the scary amount of stuff that would end up in landfill. We’re not telling you how to have fun at Halloween, we do ask though, that you take a second to think about how much rubbish it brings. If you can, try to reduce it- whether that's recycling more stuff, reusing old costumes, or making your own decorations out of things that would go in the bin.

We’ll be talking more about how you can be more eco-friendly at Halloween in other blogs and on our socials, so keep an eye out for some scarily good tips and tricks (and treats) yet to come.
