Small Changes, Less Waste: Simple Ways to Waste Less at Home

We all want to waste less, but sometimes it can feel like making a difference means making big changes. The good news is, it doesn’t have to.

Here at Company Shop, we’re all about reducing food waste – and by shopping surplus, you’re already making a difference!

Zero Waste Week is a great reminder that small changes to the way we shop, store and use things at home can add up over time. From getting more organised with your cupboards to finding a new use for an empty bottle, there are plenty of simple ways to make less waste part of your everyday routine.

Here are three easy ideas to get started.

First in, first out

It’s easy for things to get pushed to the back of the cupboard, fridge or freezer and forgotten about. Before you know it, you’ve bought another packet of the same thing, while the older one is still sitting unopened.

When you bring home new food, put it towards the back and move the older items to the front. That way, you’re more likely to spot what needs using first.

You could even have a quick ‘use me first’ section in your fridge for foods that need eating soon. It only takes a few minutes to organise, but can make a big difference when it comes to remembering what you already have.

Give plastic bottles a new purpose

With a little creativity, plastic bottles can be turned into simple plant pots for growing herbs, flowers or seedlings at home.

Simply clean your bottle, carefully cut it down to the size you need and make a couple of small holes in the bottom for drainage. Add some compost, pop in your seeds, and you’ve got yourself a homemade planter.

Freeze food in portions

Cooking more than you need doesn’t always have to mean eating the same meal for several days in a row. Instead, try freezing food in portions so you can use exactly what you need, when you need it.

This is perfect for sauces, soups, curries, and stews. Make a bigger batch, divide it into portions and freeze what you won’t eat straight away. Just remember to use freezer-safe containers or bags and label them so you know what you’ve got.

One base, endless possibilities.

Make mealtimes more exciting by turning one simple base sauce into a different meal each night. There's nothing worse than getting bored of a meal you've got 5 days worth of sitting in the freezer!

Batch cook a base sauce once, then switch it up as the week goes on: one night it becomes a pasta sauce, another night you add beans and spices for a chilli, or pair it with a fresh side and some rice.

Small changes that really add up

Wasting less doesn’t mean completely changing the way you live. Often, it’s about making small adjustments and finding habits that work for you.

And once those habits become part of your routine, wasting less can become second nature.

So, this Zero Waste Week, why not pick one small change to try at home? You might be surprised by the difference it can make.
