Working together for a sustainable Christmas

It’s Christmas time, there’s no need to be afraid. At Christmas time, we take in light and banish food waste.

But, there’s a not-so-jolly side to Christmas we need to know about. The festive period is the time of year when we put the largest amount of rubbish into landfills.

We send more than 100 million bags of rubbish to landfills each Christmas. Together, we can change that!

Fear not! We’ve got some nifty tips and tricks for keeping your hearts (and bins) merry and light this festive season.

Make your life simpler by keeping a big box aside for your leftover wrapping paper to go in. Why not make a game out of it? Every ball of paper that ends up in the box is one more mince-pie on your plate!

TOP TIP: measure your paper around the gift before cutting it to get the most of your roll.

Homemade gifts are appreciated more than you’d think. Why not make some jams and chutneys yourself?

  • Save all your jars and lids to package your creations.

  • Give them a good clean out and use some washing up liquid to remove the sticky stuff left behind by labels.

  • Use some leftover wrapping paper to add hand-written labels

It can be easy to get carried away at Christmas when food shopping, but it means that tonnes of food goes to waste. Instead of throwing it away, make the tastiest sandwiches with turkey, cranberry sauce and pigs in blankets. Left over veggies? Whip up an easy soup by blitzing them with stock.

  • Artificial trees are good if you reuse them for the 5-10 years.

  • 1 billion Christmas cards will end up in landfill, as only 1 in 4 cards can be recycled.

  • UK households throw away three-and-a-half black bags full of Christmas packaging.

Keep an eye out for more festive facts on how to reduce waste, get the most of your food shops and your money too in our other blogs and on socials.
